David Brechin-Smith
dbs-photoDavid Brechin-Smith is a writer, producer, and content developer. His work spans TV drama and comedy, documentary, feature film, and exhibition content.

He’s won awards for screenwriting and exhibition writing. TV shows he’s worked on have sold around the world and won more than 30 awards.

He led the Writing Team at Te Papa, NZ's national museum, and is now head tutor at the NZ Film and Television School. He has an MA (Distinction) in scriptwriting from Victoria University of Wellington.


2019: Head tutor at the NZ Film and Television School. Writer of TV docudrama Friend of the Friendless (in production), creator and co-producer of te reo Māori web series He Paki Taonga i a Māui, writer of feature film Lowdown Dirty Criminals (to be released 2019).

2016–2019: Senior Writer and Commissioning Editor at Te Papa. Key member of exhibition content team. Worked across the museum and art gallery on major exhibitions including Te Taiao | Nature, Toi Art, Ko Rongowhakaata, and Bug Lab (now touring internationally).

2015–2017: Co-produced feature documentary Pecking Order, and wrote TV docudrama Doubt: The Scott Watson Case.

2011–2014: Co-created and wrote WWI documentary series War News, wrote for kids’ comedy series Paradise Café, wrote web documentary series Christchurch: The Ever Evolving City, script consultant on feature documentary Propaganda.

2007–2010: Created and wrote drama series The Hothouse, and co-wrote mystery-thriller series The Cult. Both shows won a host of accolades, including best drama nominations. Co-wrote feature film The Hopes and Dreams of Gazza Snell.

2004–2006: Wrote for drama series The Insiders Guide to Happiness, and co-created and wrote for its sequel The Insiders Guide to Love. Won a NZ Screen Award for best drama script for Happiness, and a Qantas TV Award for best drama script for Love. Both shows won numerous awards, including best drama.

2000–2003: Wrote for comedy-drama series The Strip, and comedy series Lovebites. Wrote for many light entertainment shows, including McPhail & Gadsby, and ventriloquist David Strassman’s talk show.
